Super Duper Wednesday Link Karma - 12-05-2007

So I am still in awe over the flooding on I-5 by Chehalis, WA. This week’s storm up here in the Pacific Northwest was just plain nasty. Fortunately, Portland fared well relatively speaking. I’m still busy on project based work, though I will be getting a few other short blog posts out this morning. So what’s cooking this week?

First and foremost, I have been meaning to get the word out about WeoGeo. They are a finalist in the Amazon Start-up Challenge. If you haven’t already done so, go to this link and VOTE for this geospatial startup. I can’t believe that Justin.tv is getting votes (must be the American Idol crowd).

As James Fee recently pointed out, the blogosphere is starting to get some reactions about this post on APB. You can read some of the reactions here, here, here, here, and here. All I can say is wow. The ‘MapInfo school of thought’ to me seems like part of the reason that GIS isn’t as “sticky” as it could be, as it inherently paints GIS as some sort of ivory tower that is not fit for the un-worthy. I guess if there’s Kool Aid out there, someone will drink it. Guess it’s the same type of reasoning that incorrectly paints blogs as unreliable sources of information…here’s my quote for the week then: “blogs aren’t really media. They are unreliable sources of information. Only mainstream, corporate media is a reliable source of information.” Seriously, WTF?

Apparently, GPS-enabled mobile phone shipments will more than Double over the next five years. According to research firm ABI,
revenue generated by shipments of GPS phones to equal $100 billion in 2012.

John Musser at ProgrammableWeb chimes in on Serena Software who today began shipping their Serena Business Mashups 2008 platform. The new tool includes a ‘Mashup Composer’ which looks really slick.

From the ‘let’s just call it interesting’ department: Yojo Mobile has released MizPee 2.0. The name says it all.

Lastly, Mashable has the inside scoop on Live Documents, and they claim it looks just like MS Office. Screenshots here. Curious to see how it will compare to Google Docs.
